Lesson Structure
No two swimmers will learn in the exact same way, but having levels helps to give both me and the swimmer a good idea of their current skill level and can help us to see progress over time!
Swimmers will progress to the next level when they can comfortably perform level specific key skills unassisted.
-
Who belongs in level 1?
Absolute beginners
Any child under 3 (no younger than 12 months)
What will we learn in level 1?
Get a feeling for being in water, exploring all body positions.
How to float and balance in water, breath control, and basic propulsive movements.
Major focus on safety and self-rescue.
What will level 1 classes be like?
Relaxed. Level 1 is for those who are very new to swimming or unsure of the water so we will learn at a pace dictated by the swimmer’s readiness to take on new challenges.
For children these classes are mostly focused on water confidence and basic safety skills. In practice this means lots of songs and games!
For older swimmers, this would be a time for us to work through any fears or insecurities you feel are holding you back from being able to swim.
-
Who belongs in level 2?
Children aged 3 and up who are seeking independence in the pool (by this I mean the child would like to be able to independently play in deep water pools while under adult supervision, no child should ever be swimming unsupervised)
Adults who want to become more competent swimmers or are looking to assess their skill level.
What will we learn in level 2?
Foundational propulsive movements which will build toward competitive strokes.
Techniques for treading water and energy conserving swim strokes.
By the end of level 2 the swimmer will be able to pass a water competency sequence in most pools.
What will a level 2 class be like?
Exciting! Lots of games and challenges designed to encourage swimmers to push the boundaries of their aquatic abilities.
Lessons are designed to teach swimmers how to propel themselves through the water in a variety of ways, giving them the ability to navigate in the water with agility and ease!
-
Who belongs in level 3?
Children who are at or near a competitive skill level. Possibly planning on joining a swim or water polo team, jr. lifeguards, etc. and would like to shore up their skills in preparation.
Adults who are looking for feedback on stroke technique, are looking to brush up on swimming skills for a specific event (triathlon, vacation, etc.), or want to swim for fitness and are looking for individualized coaching.
What will we learn in level 3?
Technical details of the four competitive strokes (freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly).
Advanced skills like diving, race starts/finishes, and flip turns depending on your swimming goals
Shared pool etiquette, such as how to circle swim, for swimmers looking to join a community pool.
What will a level 3 class look like?
This level of class will vary greatly depending on goals and starting abilities of the swimmer, as well as the features of the facility we are using for the lessons.
adaptive aquatics
Adaptive lessons are for those looking for the benefits of aquatic movement without the end goal being to master competitive swim techniques. This could mean lessons focused on mobility, balance, or general fitness and sensory exploration. What these type of lessons look like will depend wholly on the goals, age, and abilities of the swimmer. Please contact me with any relevant information about your swimmer and we can schedule a free consultation session to talk in more specific detail about what lessons could look like for them!
